Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 115 (May 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Dee R. Sparkman (ASN: 39911402), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 5 February 1945. During an attack on strong enemy positions in Manila, a member of Sergeant Sparkman’s platoon was hit by intense hostile machine gun fire. Sergeant Sparkman voluntarily crawled forward under this fire to reach his fallen comrade, only to find that he was already dead. However, he determined to bring the body back to the American lines, and although still under heavy fire, he managed to return safely with his burden after a grueling 25 minute ordeal. Sergeant Sparkman then returned to his organization and courageously led the platoon in an attack which destroyed the Japanese strong point and permitted the advance of the entire battalion. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
