The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Guy F. Snead (ASN: 34577426), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. During the attack against The English Club in Manila on 16 February 1945, a rifle company sustained heavy casualties, and the anti-tank platoon of a battalion headquarters company was called forward to act as riflemen and help defend the structure. During the night the Japanese launched an attack, and in the ensuing fight the platoon leader, sergeant and four other men of the anti-tank unit were wounded. Corporal Snead, although himself suffering from a painful wound in his ankle, immediately assumed command. He hastily reorganized his unit, directed the evacuation of the wounded and successfully repulsed the hostile attack. During the next three days the enemy made repeated attempts to retake the building, but Corporal Snead, despite his increasingly painful wound, courageously remained with his platoon, directing effective fire against the Japanese, and frustrating their every effort. From positions in the buildings our mortar and artillery observers directed fire which enabled our forces to eventually destroy enemy resistance in the vicinity. Corporal Snead’s courage and devotion to duty were in the finest tradition of the military service.
