The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Bruce A. Hiller, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 29 January 1969 while serving as an armored cavalry vehicle commander with Troop F, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Sergeant Hiller’s platoon was maneuvering in an enemy camp when it suddenly came under an intense barrage of automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenade fire. Sergeant Hiller spotted an enemy soldier inside a bunker and immediately engaged the man with his machine gun. Disregarding his own safety he leaped from his position and while others provided covering fire assaulted the fortified bunker. When he was within a few feet of the opening he tossed a grenade and rolled away to avoid the blast. While rolling he saw another opening and threw a grenade into it eliminating the threat. Sergeant Hiller’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
