The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Dallas M. Sutton (ASN: 38564710), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 29 January 1945. During an advance preparatory to assaulting a hill in the vicinity of Fort Stotsenberg, the enemy began raking our troops with machine gun and 20-mm. fire. Our troops were forced to take cover and one man accompanying Private First Class Sutton in the assault platoon was seriously hit. The enemy automatic fire was still so heavy that Private First Class Sutton could not stand up to carry the casualty. He placed the stricken man on his back, crawled twenty-five yards to a road, where, still under hostile fire he arose, picked up his companion, and dashed across to safety. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Sutton, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
