The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Wayne E. Stevenson (ASN: 35007706), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 7 February 1945. During a heavy enemy mortar and artillery barrage, Corporal Stevenson, an ambulance driver for a collecting company, exhibited outstanding courage in going to the aid of wounded comrades. In one instance, during the peak of the shelling, he voluntarily left his shelter and raced across 100 yards of exposed ground to help carry a casualty to safety. On another occasion he fearlessly drove his vehicle over the shell-swept ground to pick up the injured. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
