Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 133 (May 27, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Fred R. Thompson (ASN: 33085366), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 20 February 1945. During an attack on a strong enemy-held building, Private Thompson saw a wounded American soldier lying in an exposed position. He immediately dashed forward under enemy fire which ploughed the earth around him, lifted the injured man bodily, and carried him to safety. Private Thompson’s heroic act saved the wounded man’s life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
