The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Kenneth T. Thomas (ASN: 0-1180747), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 140th Field Artillery Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 18 February 1945. During action at the University of the Philippines, the Japanese succeeded in attacking and entering the building where Frist Lieutenant Thomas had his observation post. In the assault he was seriously wounded by grenades. However, First Lieutenant Thomas made his way to his radio. There he called for artillery fire on all possible avenues of approach to the building, contacted the infantry for assistance, and prevented the enemy from exploiting his gains. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Thomas, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
