Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 139 (June 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Cosmo V. Terranova (ASN: 36811160), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Polo, Luzon, Philippine Islands on 10 February 1945. During an attack against strong enemy positions, Private Terranova, a wireman with an infantry company, performed a multitude of duties with exemplary courage under intense enemy fire. He crawled over rice fields which afforded little cover from the hostile fire in order to lay and repair communication lines. Private Terranova also relieved the radio operator when occasion demanded. When he observed two wounded soldiers lying helpless under Japanese fire, Private Terranova crawled forward twice under the most hazardous conditions to move them to a position from which they could be evacuated. At all times he exhibited outstanding initiative and courage which materially assisted his company in successfully accomplishing its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
