The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Eugene D. Travis (ASN: 0-520767), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 6th Field Artillery Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. When his division’s command post and an adjacent air strip was brought under intense enemy artillery fire, at Tumauini, on 24 June 1945, Lieutenant Travis ran across the strip during the height of the barrage and boarded a cub plane to act as an artillery air observer. Although the take-off was made particularly hazardous by numerous shell craters and the only light available was dim moonlight, the aircraft successfully took to the air, and Lieutenant Travis proceeded to adjust effective counter-battery fire against the Japanese guns. His technical skill, prompt action, and complete disregard for his personal safety was directly responsible for the destruction of two and silencing of several hostile artillery pieces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
