Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 209 (July 27, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Henry Tokar (ASN: 32172040), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. On 13 February 1945, during the battle for Manila, Sergeant Tokar, a company aid man, crawled forward, under heavy enemy fire to administer first aid to several badly wounded men. After he had completed this task he noticed two other wounded men lying still farther from our lines in an area subjected to heavy enemy machine gun fire. Unhesitatingly he went to their assistance and pulled the first man to the safety of our lines. Then, again exposing himself to the enemy fire, he returned and dragged the other man to safety. Sergeant Tokar’s courageous and voluntary action saved the lives of two of his comrades. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
