Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 188 (July 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Donald B. Thomson (ASN: 0-1041250), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Division Artillery, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. When his division’s command post and an adjacent air strip were brought under intense enemy artillery fire at Tumauini on 24 June 1945, Captain Thomson, an artillery liaison pilot, courageously took off during the height of the barrage in order to direct counter-battery fire at the hostile guns. Although the field was heavily pock-marked with shell craters, and the only light available was dim moonlight, he successfully took his cub plane into the air and proceeded to effectively adjust our artillery. Captain Thomson’s technical skill, prompt action, and complete disregard for his personal safety was directly responsible for the destruction of two and silencing of several hostile guns. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
