Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 324 (October 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Harvey G. Thompson (ASN: 20518444), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Philippine Islands, on 8 July 1945. When a member of his platoon was seriously wounded near Baguio, Technical Sergeant Thompson, with complete disregard for his personal safety, ran forward under heavy enemy fire to aid the injured man. Then, still under intense fire, he dragged the casualty 35 yards to a small depression at the side of the road. Technical Sergeant Thompson’s courageous action enabled a litter team to safely evacuate his wounded comrade. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Thompson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
