The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Airman First Class Gary Herman, United States Air Force, for heroism while engaged in ground operations against an opposing armed force at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, on 18 February 1968. On that date the Air Base came under concentrated rocket and mortar attack by hostile forces, within seconds, several aircraft were ablaze in the squadron revetment area. With complete disregard for his personal safety and while still under attack Airman Herman assisted in extinguishing the fires on two aircraft. He also helped push a third aircraft to safety thereby saving it from sure damage and probable destruction. By his heroic actions and unselfish devotion to duty Airman Herman has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
