The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade William N. Worsham, Jr. (ASN: 34195141), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. On 19 June 1945 a motorized reconnaissance party was advancing on a side road toward San Antonio when it was ambushed by enemy tanks. Corporal Worsham ordered his machine gun squad to de-truck and take cover. Then he realized the necessity of removing his machine gun from the trailer, and started to crawl toward the vehicle. However, intense fire from a hostile machine gun forced him to withdraw. He then crawled toward the trailer from another direction, but again Japanese fire forced him to take cover. Valiantly inching his way over the fire-swept area for the third time, Corporal Worsham finally succeeded in reaching his objective. He raised up and drew a machine gun half-way out of the vehicle when the hostile gun once more opened fire and mortally wounded him. Corporal Worsham courageously sacrificed his life in a gallant attempt to put his machine gun into action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
