Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 127 (May 21, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) George J. Woods (ASN: 0-311091), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 3d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 23 February 1945. As commander of an infantry battalion Major Woods planned and personally directed the attack of his unit on the Goodyear Rubber Company and Mint Buildings in Manila and the West Wall of Intramuros. Disregarding his own safety, Major Woods crossed the Pasig River with the reserve company and advanced through enemy sniper and mortar fire from excellently concealed Japanese emplacements in upper floors of buildings. When he reached a point between the two advancing rifle companies, he established an observation post and directed the assault. Except for small pockets of resistance in tunnels at Fort Santiago, the Battalion’s attack on the Walled City was accomplished with a minimum of losses, and resulted in a successful and rapid conclusion of the difficult mission. Major Woods’ courage and aggressive leadership served as an inspiration to all of the officers and men of his battalion. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
