Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 292 (September 11, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade [then Private First Class] Kenneth C. Wolff (ASN: 36732415), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 21 February 1945. During the attack against the Ice Plant in Manila, the squad to which Technician Fifth Grade Wolff was attached as a Medical Aidman was forced to withdraw by a shower of grenades from the roof of a building. As they returned, they were compelled to cross a corridor containing an enemy machine gun emplaced but five yards from the entrance which fired a burst at anyone crossing its lane of fire. All members of the unit, including Technician Fifth Grade Wolff, successfully crossed this corridor, except one soldier who collapsed as he approached the passageway. Leaving his position of cover, Technician Fifth Grade Wolff courageously passed the machine gun again to reach the casualty. With hostile rifle fire and grenade fragments falling about him, he administered first aid. Then, braving the fire of the Japanese machine gun in the corridor for the third time, Technician Fifth Grade Wolff carried the injured man to safety. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Wolff, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
