Action Date:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Herbert Charles Hertel, Jr. (ASN: 0-95970), United States Army, for gallantry in action against an armed hostile force on 10 March 1967 while serving as Commanding Officer, Company M, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Captain Hertel’s armored unit was engaged in a reconnaissance mission when it was diverted to an area of suspected Viet Cong activity. Leading his men through the dense jungle Captain Hertel quickly proceeded with the new mission. Nearing the enemy positions he deployed his tanks and probed the area by fire reconnaissance. The lead armored element was suddenly subject to a barrage of mortar, recoilless rifle and small arms fire coming from concealed bunkers. Quickly analyzing he situation he began to direct the fire and maneuver of his tanks while simultaneously calling for intense artillery, mortar and aircraft fire on suspected enemy routes of withdrawal. Personally leading a spirited assault on the Viet Cong positions Captain Hertel inspired his men and caused them to aggressively emulate his example. The fierce attack was executed in such a flawless manner that the well-entrenched Viet Cong were overrun and defeated. Captain Hertel’s determined leadership and outstanding courage during his encounter was directly responsible for the seizure of a regimental size enemy base camp and the capture of twenty seven Viet Cong weapons. Captain Hertel’s valorous actions and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
