Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 101 (April 28, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert Muarice Winters (ASN: 36436023), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 15 January 1945. Private Winters acted as lead scout for his unit during an attack upon a Japanese force, which was concealed in ditches beside a road. The advance had proceeded about 150 yards across a series of rice paddies, offering little cover for the attackers, when Private Winters discovered the enemy’s position, and after signaling to his unit, he moved aggressively toward his objective. The first burst of hostile fire painfully wounded Private Winters, but he courageously continued the advance, placing effective fire upon the enemy. His company commander finally ordered him from the field, but his courageous action had been an inspiration to the other men of his platoon. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
