Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 144 (June 6, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Wayne A. Willard (ASN: 20506513), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 8 February 1945. When their platoon came under a barrage of intense enemy mortar and machine gun fire during an assault, and many men were wounded, Sergeant Willard and a comrade immediately went to the assistance of the company aid man. With shells bursting all around them, the pair quickly and efficiently rendered first aid to the wounded, and then working as a litter team, evacuated six of the stricken men while under continued heavy fire from the enemy machine guns. Their heroism under fire and the efficient capable way in which they handled a difficult task saved the lives of the six men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
