Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 94 (April 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph L. White (ASN: 34709812), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 5 February, 1945. After Private White’s squad had successfully crossed a bridge, the enemy opened fire and halted the remainder of the platoon. He voluntarily crawled to an exposed position on the bridge, and fired his automatic rifle so effectively that the platoon was able to successfully attack the enemy forces from the flanks and rear, completely destroying them. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
