The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Donald H. Wheeler (ASN: 39460550), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. During the fighting at Fort Stotensburg on 28 January 1945, Private Wheeler, at the risk of his own life, crossed 75 yards of fire-swept area, devoid of cover or concealment to render first aid to a wounded comrade. He then successfully dragged the casualty back to safety. Later, in going to the aid of another wounded comrade who was laying helpless in the line of enemy rifle fire, Private Wheeler was painfully wounded. Despite his wounds he crawled to the side of the casualty and administered first aid. After the intense hostile fire had been silenced, Private Wheeler helped evacuate the wounded man. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
