Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 139 (June 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Paul Wells (ASN: 32483101), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy at on Luzon, Philippine Islands on 20 April 1945. As a volunteer member of an Ammunition and Pioneer platoon, Private Wells was leading a group of Filipino litter bearers down a dangerous mountain trail when the party was fired upon by an enemy light machine gun and supporting rifles. Four litter bearers were killed and the remainder dropped the two seriously wounded American soldiers whom they were carrying and ran for cover, leaving Private Wells alone with the casualties. He pulled the litters behind some low shrubbery, and then saw a Japanese soldier creeping up the trail. Waiting until the enemy came within 20 yards of him, Private Wells killed him with a carbine. Then, scouting the area, Private Wells reorganized his party, and brought the casualties safely to an aid station. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
