Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 120 (May 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clarence P. Walter (ASN: 33696042), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 775th Tank Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 17 April, 1945. Serving as loader, gunner, and commander of his tank, Private Walter alone destroyed two Japanese tanks and broke up a dangerous enemy counter-attack against American forces closing in on Baguio. This brave action prevented the enemy from surprising a company of infantry, and elements of a medical unit halted around a curve in the mountain road behind him. Private Walter’s initiative and cool determination enabled our infantrymen to take cover and subsequently resume the initiative in their advance. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
