Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 296 (September 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Glea H. Wade (ASN: 37468052), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Philippine Islands, on 23 April 1945. During the attack against Baguio, our forces met intense hostile fire from a hill overlooking the city, and Staff Sergeant Wade’s platoon was ordered to eliminate the strong enemy opposition. Deploying his men, he led the advance up the hill. After moving about 25 yards, he observed a well-concealed Japanese cave position. Ordering his men to give him covering fire, he crawled to a position about five yards from the position, and personally killed four Japanese soldiers with grenades and rifle fire. This position was found to contain a 37-mm anti-tank gun. Continuing the advance, the platoon successfully neutralized five more hostile positions, killing numerous enemy soldiers and capturing three machine guns. Through Staff Sergeant Wade’s courageous actions and fine leadership, great losses wee inflicted on the Japanese forces without an American casualty. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Wade, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
