The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles M. Viscione (ASN: 42006860), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 8 May 1945. While his company was making an attack upon a well defended ridge, Sergeant Viscione, an acting squad leader, dashed swiftly through enemy fire to reach a vantage point from which to gain better observation. He discovered five Japanese soldiers setting up a heavy machine gun which, if fired, would have placed grazing fire over the entire route of advance. Sergeant Viscione immediately crawled forward alone and opened fire on the enemy position, killing three, seriously wounding a fourth, and causing the withdrawal of the fifth. By his outstanding courage he destroyed a dangerous threat to the platoon’s flank, enabling them to maneuver and seize the objective with minimum losses. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
