The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class John Patrick Henry, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 10 March 1970, while serving as a Medic with Troop L, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On that date, while on a reconnaissance mission in dense jungle, his unit encountered an undetermined number of North Vietnamese soldiers firing rocket propelled grenades and small arms from a well-concealed positions. Specialist Fourth Class Henry noticed members of a vehicle who had been wounded and dismounted his own tank. Despite the deadly hail of enemy fire, he proceeded to the aid of his injured comrades. While the hostile fire was directed on the friendly troop, Specialist Fourth Class Henry was mortally wounded. Specialist Fourth Class Henry’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
