The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Harry W. Slack (ASN: 0-1011302), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. As Lieutenant Slack’s tank platoon advanced near Santia on 14 June 1945, it suddenly drew fire from well concealed enemy positions. Deploying his unit on a line, Lieutenant Slack left the safety of his compartment and from a completely exposed position on the deck of his tank, skillfully coordinated the attack by means of signals with a large orange flag. His gallant action and efficient leadership caused great confusion amongst the foe, and the infantry easily disposed of the Japanese force. After the action it was discovered that 180 enemy had been killed, two field pieces destroyed, and two heavy machine guns destroyed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
