The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Mark A. Sisson (ASN: 36717739), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 30 January 1945. When an enemy machine gun held up the advance of a rifle company, Sergeant Sisson, a machine gun section leader, led his men into an exposed position to skillfully and quickly bring neutralizing fire upon the Japanese positions. He remained at his post until hostile fire became so intense that it wounded five men, including himself, and drove the squad temporarily to covered positions. While in this covered location, Sergeant Sisson saw two of his helplessly wounded comrades lying exposed to the enemy fire. Despite his wounds he inched his way forward and laboriously succeeded in helping them get out of the direct line of enemy fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
