The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert W. Sievers (ASN: 0-1300723), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 18 February 1945. When his platoon was ordered to reduce an enemy strong-point in a building, Lieutenant Sievers crawled forward under fire to personally reconnoiter the hostile emplacement. Then he led a half squad of men into the building. As they advanced, intense Japanese fire wounded two men, one of whom was unable to move and lay in an exposed position. Lieutenant Sievers left his covered location, crawled back under fire to the injured soldier and dragged him to a place of safety. After administering first aid and supervising evacuation of the casualty, Lieutenant Sievers returned to his platoon and led them in a successful attack against the Japanese position. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
