The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Vernon E. Shelton (ASN: 6931679), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 14 February, 1945. Private Shelton’s squad was held up by intense hostile fire, and a tank was called to support the advance. When its crew had difficulty in locating the target, Private Shelton voluntarily left his covered position, and braved heavy cross fire to reach the telephone at the back of the tank. Then, while exposed to the fire and direct observation of the enemy, he directed the tank so expertly that the Japanese emplacement was destroyed, allowing the advance to continue, and effecting the rescue of two seriously wounded men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
