The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles D. Shedd (ASN: 0-513547), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 8 April 1945. First Lieutenant Shedd’s platoon was attacking strong enemy positions near Salat when the lead scout was seriously wounded. Exposing himself to the intense hostile fire, First Lieutenant Shedd immediately went to the rescue. An enemy bullet smashed in the side of First Lieutenant Shedd’s helmet, cutting his head and partially stunning him. However, he continued to assist his fellow soldier to cover. Refusing to go to the aid station, First Lieutenant Shedd again proceeded to lead his platoon in the attack. The advance had proceeded a short distance when the Japanese again opened fire. Realizing that his exposed men were in danger, First Lieutenant Shedd moved forward alone, diverting hostile fire from the scouts and causing the foe to reveal their positions. In a few minutes he was hit and seriously wounded. Refusing to allow aid men to expose themselves by coming to his aid, he crawled unassisted to cover, and while waiting for a litter, gave his platoon sergeant a plan of attack which was used successfully the following day. First Lieutenant Shedd’s service was an outstanding example of courage and devotion to duty. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Shedd, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
