Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 284 (September 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Milton R. Shaffer (ASN: 13050055), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. On 21 April 1945, shortly after an infantry battalion had secured a strategically important hill overlooking the Irisan River Bridge, the enemy began a general counterattack in different sectors along the hill. When apprised of the situation, Sergeant Shaffer immediately brought his squad into action, leading them in a furious charge against the enemy. Maintaining a rapid rate of fire, the squad swept the opposing enemy force with intense rifle fire. Under Sergeant Shaffer’s direction an enemy machine gun which threatened to disrupt the American counterattack was neutralized. He personally killed four enemy riflemen during this action. The courage and gallant leadership of Sergeant Shaffer contributed much to the successful repulse of the fierce Japanese attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
