Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 134 (May 29, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Max I. Seslar (ASN: 0-410722), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 8 February 1945. When a platoon from the company which he commanded was halted by a Japanese strong point, Captain Seslar ordered squad assault teams to attack from the flanks. He then accompanied the left flank squad and successfully directed operations from an exposed position in the middle of the street. When one of his Browning Automatic Riflemen was wounded, he picked up the automatic weapon, trained it on the enemy, and fired a steady stream of bullets which killed eleven Japanese. Later, while aggressively leading his company in another attack, Captain Seslar was mortally wounded by Japanese machine gun fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
