The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Anthony Herbert (Hebert), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Herbert distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 10 March 1970 while serving as a gunner with Troop L, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date as his element was engaged by an enemy force Specialist Herbert saw the First Platoon Leader wounded by enemy fire. He immediately left the relative safety of his vehicle and maneuvered 100 meters through the deadly enemy fire to direct the movement of the platoon against the well-entrenched enemy forces. As the contact continued Specialist Herbert received painful shrapnel wounds but refused to be evacuated and continued to guide the assault upon the enemy. Specialist Fourth Class Herbert’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
