The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Howard W. Schultz (ASN: 0-345807), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 5 February 1945. During a fierce fire fight with the enemy in Manila, Colonel Schultz, Commander of an infantry battalion, led a platoon of litter bearers through a street between fiercely burning buildings to evacuate casualties suffered by the battalion’s advance elements. Colonel Schultz repeatedly risked his life, in danger from both burning buildings and the enemy gun fire which swept the entire area, to supervise the evacuation of the wounded. When an enemy attack threatened to cut off the route of withdrawal, Colonel Schultz personally took command of the covering forces and rallying his men drove the enemy back and forced them to abandon two gun positions. Colonel Schultz gallantly remained in this dangerous area until all casualties had been evacuated and the withdrawal effected. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
