The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Claude L. Schindorff (ASN: 350125687), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 7 February, 1945. Corporal Schindorff was serving as aid man with an infantry company when it came under a heavy concentration of enemy machine gun, mortar, and artillery fire, which severely wounded the leader of the point squad. Corporal Schindorff ran across 125 yards of fire-swept terrain, picked up the casualty, and carried him 75 yards to a partially covered position. After administering first aid, he again placed the casualty on his back and carried him 75 yards to a position of safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
