Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 325 (October 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Rudy A. Salvette (ASN: 0-1317681), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Philippine Islands, on 10 June 1945. While Captain Salvette’s company was proceeding north along Highway Number 5 in Orioung Pass, the leading platoon approached and commenced to cross a bridge across a small stream. Before its first squad had reached the far side, the enemy, from well concealed and camouflaged positions, brought deadly machine gun and rifle fire upon our force. Captain Salvette immediately ran forward among the troops upon whom the fire was being directed and exposed himself fearlessly in order to gain observation on the Japanese emplacements. Standing erect in the center of the road, he was struck in the throat and face by a bullet from an enemy rifleman, and fell dangerously and painfully wounded. Although his throat was bleeding profusely, he continued his visual reconnaissance from where he lay, and insisted upon relating to the men who came to his aid what information he had gathered. Captain Salvette’s persistence and courage, both before and after being wounded, and his disregard of his own serious condition while doing his utmost to bring the situation under control, made it possible for his men to extricate themselves without further casualties. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Salvette, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
