The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry). [then Second Lieutenant] Eugene Salgo (ASN: 0-1323743), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 18 February 1945. During his platoon’s assault against the New Polico Building in Manila, First Lieutenant Salgo advanced with his two lead scouts. While they were cautiously moving along an open street the Japanese suddenly placed intense rifle and automatic fire on the American force. Under First Lieutenant Salgo’s cool and skillful leadership his men were quickly deployed in sheltered positions. Then, courageously exposing himself to the continual hostile fire, he went forward to search out the strength and disposition of the Japanese. Although painfully wounded, he secured valuable information, and made his way back to the company command post. When he arrived there he was wounded again by an enemy mortar shell. However, before allowing himself to be evacuated he courageously appraised his company commander of the enemy disposition. The information secured by First Lieutenant Salgo at such great personal risk enabled his company to capture the assigned objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Salgo, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
