Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 105 (May 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George Sackash (ASN: 36584821), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 11 February 1945. As it prepared to advance on strong enemy positions, Private Sackash’s company was stopped by intense fire from a well emplaced enemy machine gun. Private Sackash, carrying his light-machine gun, dashed fifty yards up the street to a position that offered some cover, although enemy fire harassed him as he ran. Then, setting up his gun, he poured fire into the enemy pillbox, silencing the Japanese gun and allowing the advance to continue. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
