Headquarters, Americal Division, General Orders No. 1601 (December 11, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Field Artillery) Rederick (Roderick) C. Heath (ASN: OF-106132), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Heath distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 24 September 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. On that date, Captain Heath was flying an unarmed Command and Control helicopter near Tam Ky. While elements of two armored cavalry troops were sweeping a suspected enemy village, a reinforced North Vietnamese Army Company suddenly attacked from extremely well-fortified positions. Captain Heath with complete disregard for his own safety continually flew his aircraft at low altitudes over the scene of the battle to enable the Squadron Commander to closely coordinate friendly fire. At all times he was exposed to enemy ground fire and a large number of friendly ricochets. Captain Heath’s helicopter served to adjust artillery fire and also closely integrated helicopter gunships, aircraft strikes and four medical evacuation helicopters. The attack was the beginning of a fiercely fought battle which resulted in 48 confirmed enemy dead and the capture of numerous crew served and individual weapons. Captain Heaths determined and courageous actions at the rick of his own life are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
