Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 94 (April 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lawrence Rose (ASN: 35797686), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 13 February, 1945. Private Rose was near an enemy emplacement when it opened fire on our advancing troops and seriously wounded one of his comrades, who lay in the open street. He accurately threw a hand grenade into the pillbox and neutralized the gun. Then running to the side of the injured man, he lifted him up and carried him to safety, although other enemy machine guns were placing intense fire on the open area. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
