Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 77 (January 12, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) Thomas G. Hayes (ASN: 0-5244802), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 13 November 1968 while serving as a helicopter commander with 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date in the vicinity of An Loc, elements of the 1st Squadron suddenly became engaged with a large enemy force. When ammunition had to be resupplied to the embattled troops, Lieutenant Hayes completed four resupply missions under extremely adverse and dangerous conditions. Each time upon approaching the extremely narrow landing zone, the aircraft came under intense automatic weapons fire. However he immediately directed his door gunners to fire and began taking evasive action. As the aircraft descended into the landing zone, he realized that since his aircraft was overloaded and the landing zone was narrow it would be impossible to climb out again. Lieutenant Hayes along with his pilot skillfully affected a controlled crash landing on four occasions to deliver the ammunition to the troop. Lieutenant Hayes’ courage and professional ability contributed greatly to the successful resupply of the friendly force. First Lieutenant Hayes’ unwavering devotion to duty and personal bravery were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
