Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 148 (June 12, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Medical Administrative Corps), [then Technical Sergeant] William F. Ring (ASN: 0-2023844), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 2 and 26 February 1945. Lieutenant Ring, assistant surgeon of an infantry battalion, accompanied the assault elements of a rifle company and exposed himself to enemy fire in order to administer first aid to seriously wounded soldiers. On one occasion a mortar shell exploded only 15 yards from him, but he calmly continued his work, saving an injured man’s life. Another time, while Lieutenant Ring was working in a building, the roof of the shell-torn structure caved in, but undeterred he continued his life-saving work, assisting the litter bearers and caring for the wounded until all were evacuated under a protective screen of smoke. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
