Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 152 (June 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fourth Grade Harold C. Rhoades (ASN: 35016026), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 15 February 1945. When the squad led by Technician Fourth Grade Rhodes was halted by an enemy machine gun during essential mine removal operations in Manila, he crept to within twenty-five yards of the hostile position and succeeded in throwing a hand grenade into the open emplacement. Three Japanese soldiers attempted to flee, but they were quickly shot by the remaining members of the squad. Then, while the Americans wee engaged in removing the mines, enemy mortar fire began falling in the area. Technician Fourth Grade Rhodes ordered his men to positions of cover, but realizing the urgent need for use of the road he was clearing, he continued at his work. While in the act of extricating the last mine from the enemy’s roadblock, Technician Fourth Grade Rhodes was fatally wounded by mortar shell fragments. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fourth Grade Rhoades, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
