The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Danny B. Rhoad, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 11 February 1945. Sergeant Rhoad was in command of a platoon being subjected to heavy enemy fire from four 20 millimeter dual-purpose guns. Directing his platoon to remain in position, he moved by short rushes through the intense hostile fire to a house from which he could direct white phosphorus rifle grenade fire and mortar smoke shells on the Japanese position. Returning to his platoon, he led his command to a safer position from which to make an attack, following which the enemy strongpoint was successfully assaulted. Sergeant Rhoad’s high quality of leadership was demonstrated by his courage, coolness and correct estimate of the situation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
