The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) William G. Quigley (ASN: 0-1794984), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. As Captain Quigley’s company advanced up the road toward Paguio on 13 April 1945, it met fierce machine gun and mortar fire from enemy positions on hills overlooking the highway, which severed communications between the infantry and its tank support. Captain Quigley immediately dashed across the open road in order to reach the lead tank. Although the intense hostile fire wounded him in his heel, he successfully reached his objective, and then, while fully exposed to the Japanese fire, he directed accurate tank fire which destroyed three Japanese heavy machine gun emplacements, and enabled, his company to accomplish its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
