The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Bernard Pottenburg (ASN: 6713599), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. During an attack by the Battalion to which Private Pottenburg was attached as an Aidman on 22 February 1945, numerous casualties were sustained from heavy enemy rifle, machine gun, and mortar fire. One wounded man lay in an exposed position 50 yards from the most advanced friendly position. Disregarding the enemy fire, Private Pottenburg dashed from his place of cover, crossed the open area to the wounded man, and dragged him back to a position where he could administer first aid. From there he dragged the man back to friendly lines. Private Pottenburg’s gallant action saved the life of the wounded man. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
