The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Alfred A. Potteiger (ASN: 0-410724), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 13 February 1945. Captain Potteiger, an infantry company commander, personally led his company in a successful attack against strong Japanese forces and positions. While good progress was made throughout the day’s attack, a critical moment arose when the exhausted troops encountered two huge concrete bunkers held by 41 Japanese which threatened to prolong the assault until a dangerously late hour. Captain Potteiger immediately left his command post, moved into an area covered by intense enemy fire and, calling on his men to follow him, led and inspired them in a smashing charge. Leaving a few men to mop up, he moved on 600 yards at a dead assault run and quickly overwhelmed all remaining enemy in the sector. The attack led by Captain Potteiger resulted in 128 enemy dead and the capture of a vitally important objective, which enabled his regiment to successfully accomplish its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
