The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Orlando Felix Pineda (ASN: 38349353), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. During an attack near Fort Stotsenburg on 29 January 1945, Private Pineda saw a comrade fall wounded in an exposed position. He immediately left his place of partial cover, disregarding enemy machine gun fire which was cutting the area, and crawled to the injured man’s side. Private Pineda administered first aid, and started to move the casualty to safety. However, the intensity of the Japanese fire precluded this move, so Private Pineda stayed with the man for fifteen minutes in the exposed position until there was a lull in the hostile fire. He then pulled the injured man to a sheltered location, from which he was evacuated by aid men. Private Pineda’s quick thinking and courageous action saved his comrade’s life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
