Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 270 (August 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Tommie K. Pierce (ASN: 0-519228), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 251st Field Artillery Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. Lieutenant Pierce, a field artillery liaison pilot, was observing and adjusting artillery fire in the Cagayan Valley on 14 June 1945, when his cub plane was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire, the fuselage was partially cut away at the tail, the cabin and cockpit riddled with bullet holes, and one tire shot to pieces. Disregarding his personal safety, Lieutenant Pierce continued his mission, directed effective artillery fire, destroying the enemy force, and then coolly made a crash landing. His outstanding efficiency and courage contributed materially to the successful advance of our ground forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
